LSA Collegiate Fellowship Program

The College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA) at the University of Michigan (U-M) offers its students an outstanding undergraduate education in the liberal arts at a premier research institution, and is dedicated to building a broadly diverse and inclusive scholarly environment. One mechanism for achieving this aim is through innovative faculty hiring programs such as the LSA Collegiate Fellows Program, which seeks to recruit exceptional early-career scholars who have engaged in efforts to increase access and inclusion in higher education.

The LSA Collegiate Fellows (LCF) Program, launched in 2016, has hired more than 60 outstanding faculty who, through their research, teaching, and/or service, have engaged in efforts to build a broadly diverse and equitable scholarly and learning community. Initially, the program recruited postdoctoral fellows and provided them with support to prepare for tenure-track faculty appointments in LSA. The program quickly expanded to include the recruitment of new assistant professors, with support tailored to success on the tenure-track. In 2023, the Senior LSA Collegiate Fellows Program was created to recruit new associate professors into tenured appointments in LSA and support their success at mid-career.

In 2026-27, LSA, in partnership with the Phillip J. Bowman Center for Scholarship to Practice, resumes the LCF Program after a one-year pause. Scholars hired through the program will receive a tenure-track assistant professor position, with the option of 1-2 years as a postdoctoral fellow prior to their tenure-track appointment.

The program seeks applicants who demonstrate how their research, teaching, and/or service have contributed to efforts to reduce educational disparities based on factors such as race, ethnicity, first generation status, familial income, disability, sexual orientation, gender, immigrant status, and veteran status (this is not an exhaustive list). These criteria are applied equitably to evaluate all applicants’ efforts to address these or other educational disparities. The program does not consider an applicant’s protected identity characteristics.
